J.J. Johnson: Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame Celebration
Jazz at Lincoln Center
With trombonists Vincent Gardner and Elliot Mason, trumpeter Derrick Gardner, alto saxophonist Sherman Irby, bassist Gerald Cannon, and drummer Ali Jackson The votes are in, and now it’s time to celebrate the 2016 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees! Tonight we honor legendary trombonist J.J. Johnson, a virtuosic instrumentalist who adapted the challenging bop stylings of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his own, more cumbersome instrument of choice. As an ensemble member, soloist, and composer, Johnson’s legacy on the trombone is unmatched. Celebrating that legacy tonight is a sextet led by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trombonist Vincent Gardner. The group also features JLCO members Sherman Irby, Ali Jackson, and fellow trombonist Elliot Mason, as well as bass legend Gerald Cannon. Gardner always brings an abundance of virtuosity and swing to the stage, and it will be an enlightening and celebratory evening as he pays tribute to J.J. Johnson, his first great influence on the trombone.
